Phenix City, Alabama
Image of East Alabama Motor Speedway, Phenix City, Alabama

Jimmy Thomas, the patriarch of the Thomas family, began it all back in the 1940's with his fascination for tinkering with automobiles. During his service in World War II he requested a transfer to the motor pool which furthered his interests as a mechanic. After his military time Jimmy returned home and was found hanging around the old Columbus, Georgia Speedway, eventually catching the racing bug and building a car which he drove himself. An early accident and serious injuries convinced Jimmy to make the change from driver to car owner and he saw fit to put Walt Kruger, known as the "Muscogee Flyer", behind the wheel of his racer. Together the team earned the Auburn-Opelika Speedway championship and won more than anyone else that season on the Georgia dirt racing circuit. To put icing on the cake Jimmy would gain great respect around the ovals for being named Mechanic of the Year in Georgia - the first award of its kind presented to a local mechanic.

In 1955 a group of car owners took over the failing Columbus Speedway and named Jimmy Thomas Race Director. The appointment would serve as Jimmy's first promotional duties. During this period Thomas would also continue to mechanic and tune race cars - a couple belonging to Harvey Jones and Eddie McDonald, both Florida and Georgia State Champs who collected a number of big wins in the southeast.

Local historian Paul Bulloch has filled several buildings on Ga. 41 just north of Woodland with an assortment of tools, equipment, and household goods tracing Southern rural life from the 1800s to the 1960s. You'll spot treasures that were another generation's discards. Many items on display are central to the early 20th century back to a time when life was rugged and people made do with what they had, or did without. In many cases, the created their own tools which led to many inventions we take for granted today. We exhibit everything from wood burning stoves to steam tractors. With acres of buildings and displays, you can spend a couple of hours looking at items that were common just decades ago. Before electricity, clothes had to be washed by hand, here you can pump water and see the type of equipment women used to wash clothes as well as see a working smokehouse, grind grain, spin cotton and perhaps make sausage.

Image of Pine Mountain Trail Pine Mountain/Columbus Georgia

Since 1975, volunteers of all ages have labored to build and maintain the Pine Mountain Trail, a 23-mile footpath. This main trail and connecting loops, that crosses and follows the beautiful Pine Mountain ridge in west central Georgia, is inside the Franklin Delano Roosevelt State Park and near Callaway Gardens. Quiet woods, sparkling streams, misty waterfalls, rock outcroppings, varied forest, scenic overlooks, deer and turkey await your discovery. Just follow the blazes (6" by 2 ½" rectangles painted on trees). Two-foot-high rock cairns and mileage markers assist the hiker. Wooden location and mileage signs have been placed at each road crossing, trail head, junction, campsite, and at all named parking lots and trailheads. The Pine Mountain Trail offers clear crisp views of distant ridges in winter, with occasional snowfall. In the summer there are lush green ferns and lowland flowers. Wild flowers are abundant and in spring you will find flowering dogwood, native azalea, mountain laurel and rhododendron. Fall brings bright and beautiful leaves of hickory, oak, dogwood and maple, which change from day to day.

A fondness for golf shared by a number of local citizens has been credited as the probable impetus for the origination of the Country Club of Columbus. Organized in 1909, incorporation for the Country Club of Columbus was granted on August 2. L. G. Bowers, the Club's first president, along with Marshall Morton, it's secretary, signed an agreement to lease 60.8 acres of land known as "Slick Hill" off Cherokee Avenue for a ten-year period with an option to buy at the end of the lease. Construction plans began immediately and a brown stained, wood-framed structure known as the "log cabin" clubhouse became the first home of the Country Club of Columbus in 1910. 2ndClubhouse Early on the morning of July 18, 1919, the original clubhouse was destroyed by a fire of undetermined nature. Under the leadership of Club President Charles Woolfolk, immediate plans were made to rebuild. Less than a year later, on June 17, 1920, the new Mediterranean-styled, two story clubhouse hosted a dinner dance for 200 members and guests.

Berean Covenant Church was founded in December 2000. The church was not formed from a “split” or from an intentional “church plant” effort. The original members of the church came from several churches and denominations. The Lord brought them together in ways by which only He could receive the glory. Beyond love for our One Lord, the original group was united by a burden for unbiblical practices in their respective churches, and churches as a whole in our community.

OUR HISTORY In the history of our great church, it states, "On October 14, 1962 at 3:00 pm, a conference was called by the First Baptist Church of Phenix City for the purpose of dedicating Bethany Chapel as a duly constituted Southern Baptist Church. Thirty-five persons came at this time. After the church covenant was read in unison, a motion was made and seconded to call Rev. Mack E. Lowery to be the pastor of the new church. The vote was unanimous for his calling. At a called conference, the congregation voted unanimously to name the new church Bethany Baptist Church." On October 24, the church elected Trustees and gave them the authority to see and obtain the deed for the church property. In the March business conference of 1963 after months of deliberation, the church elected their first body of Deacons. In May of that same year, the church called Rev. Mack E. Lowery to the first full-time Pastor and became a full-time church. At their annual meeting on October 3-4, 1963, Russell Baptist Association voted unanimously to accept Bethany Baptist Church as a member of the association. The first Homecoming of Bethany was held the second Sunday of October, 1963.

Bread of Life Christian Center was established in 1984, under the leadership of Bishop L. D. Skinner, Sr., who is the Founder and Pastor. By having faith in God and confidence in our leader, we began to hold services in the basement of his home, with an initial group of 20 people. We outgrew this location quickly and began to seek other accommodations for our worship services.Within 3 months, God’s divine favor intervened, when the Truelight Missionary Baptist Church allowed us to use their sanctuary at 2:00 PM on Sunday afternoons to lift the name of Jesus. Although this was an unconventional time to have worship service, we were determined to bless God and grateful to Truelight.

Courageous Men. Powerful Partnerships. Changed Lives. The unique story of The Bridge Church began Easter Sunday 2008 when two close friends, Pastors Vince Allen and Chris Mitchell, took a bold move to merge their churches -- one largely African American and the other predominately Caucasian. Although church consolidation is nothing new, the merger that formed The Bridge brought about remarkable change. Pastors Vince and Chris sought to bridge the gap in the community by connecting their members with God, People and Purpose in a unique way. The Bridge now represents a place filled with unconditional love and acceptance of people from all walks of life no matter their backgrounds.

Our Core Values We believe in preaching and teaching the Scriptures, which communicate the Good News of God’s love expressed in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We believe in worship as the center of our practice of faith, wherein we willingly and joyfully enter into God’s presence through the holy acts of communion, prayer, praise, and thanksgiving. We believe in prayer as continuous awareness and communication between God and his people, directing and empowering us in seeking God’s will individually and in community. We believe in fellowship as essential for drawing people together to share their lives and create relationships that reveal and perpetuate the Gospel. We believe in cheerful giving as a central belief and way of life through which we return our talents, treasure, and time to benefit the ministry of Jesus Christ. We believe in evangelism, and are called to seek out and invite people into a life-giving relationship with Jesus Christ through his church.

Christ Community Church exists "to awaken ordinary people to extraordinary life in Christ-centered community." We understand this mission to mean that God accepts us as we are and that He loves us far too much to leave us that way. Our new life in Him opens us to the promise of extraordinary life that comes through His transforming grace. By extraordinary, we don't mean a life without problems or difficulties, but a life grounded in Christ and authentic relationships with other believers (Christ-centered community) that lifts us beyond the circumstances of everyday life. As we move further into this new way of living, our life together becomes our greatest testimony to a watching world.

Columbus by the mid 1800s, there were seven secular denominations (established by men). These groups were mainly for the White population. They included Baptist, Catholic, Episcopal, Methodist, and Presbyterian. There were two persuasions for Black people, one Methodist and one Baptist. In existence since 1930, Rosehill is the oldest church of Christ congregation in the city. Brother Floyd Decker who was from Montgomery, Alabama conducted a tent meeting. He held this meeting on a vacant lot at 14th and 18th Street. Afterwards a building was rented on 32nd Street between 11th and 12th Avenue to facilitate public worship. Later (1938), a group of members formed another downtown congregation, which was formerly known, as the Waverly Avenue Church of Christ. This group subsequently moved to Warm Springs Road.

Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He was crucified, died and was buried. On the third day, He rose from the dead and later ascended into heaven, where He remains at the right hand of God Almighty. Since all persons are separated from God by sin and are in need of forgiveness, God offers the free gift of salvation. Each person must individually accept this gift, repent of sin, and place their faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. (John 3:3)

The answer to that is more complicated than simple but we will try to simplify it for you. Edgewood is a special place with wonderful people. All come from different walks of life but they have one common goal, and that is to grow closer to God and to allow Him to rule in every facet of their lives. es, our music and worship are unique and our messages are uncompromising. Our student ministries are life-changing and our children's ministries reach out to touch the heart of each little one. But the real difference starts with God and ends with you and me. At Edgewood, Christianity is not about getting your ticket punched for heaven -- it's all about God taking a group of ordinary men and women, boys and girls, and making them something special. The primary function of the church is evangelization, the winning of the lost to Christ. It is every Christian's duty to share the wonderful, life changing Gospel he or she has experienced. The church is to have a local and world outreach to this end. The second mission of our church is the edifying of the saints. The church is to function as a training ground for Christians. It is to train, build up, strengthen, and encourage the spiritual growth of it membership. These two functions, evangelization and edification, go hand in hand and are equally needed for the balanced, successful growth of a local church.

St. Peter is unique because we are the result of a merger between St. Andrew and St. John United Methodist Churches in 2004. After much prayer and discernment in early 2004, the two churches voted to approve the merger in June of that year. On August 22, 2004, we gathered to worship and celebrate the new congregation, St. Peter United Methodist Church. We believe our unique beginning calls us to a unique future. We strive to be a relevant, faithful United Methodist congregation that combines a rich history and tradition with a the message of God's grace and love that speaks to contemporary people. Our fellowship blends the best of traditional and contemporary elements in a close knit community of faith.
